about

It was Spring of 2020 when COVID had hit the United States and jarringly changed our lives for the foreseeable future. Countless concerts were being cancelled, many restaurants went out of business, grocery stores were running out of stock, and all of my private teaching was suddenly online. There was also a paranoia and distrust in the air, partially from the incredibly toxic political animosity of recent years, which was then exacerbated by fear and uncertainty. Like so many composers and musicians during that time, I had zero commissions or concerts lined up. For my health and well being, I need to create music. So I decided that I should write more music for me to play and to record more of my music that was already written. Thus, I began composing Perception Stains Reality with the idea that it would also be on my next album of compositions.
I had been working on modes with a few of my advanced students, so they were on my mind and I decided to approach this piece using a combination of modes and shifting pitch structures/chords. It’s not “modal” in a traditional sense where the shifting chords are in a key or mode per se, rather the chords are connected in ways using common tones, chosen interval shifts, and mathematical charts that I made along the way during the compositional process. Although the seemingly “rock” band instrumentation is perhaps less common in a chamber music setting, the rhythmic interplay and overall feeling of perpetual motion are very akin to most of the other music on this album, and to my music in general. And why not have an energetic, playful, and rather optimistic sounding piece close an album surrounding Late Night Banter?
